Differential expression of the corticosteroid receptors GR1, GR2 and MR in rainbow trout organs with slow release cortisol implants

2012

The present study describes the transcriptional levels of the corticosteroid receptors (CRs) GR1, GR2 and MR in the different organs of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in response to a slow release of cortisol, throughout a 10-day period. We show that after short term (1 day after cortisol implantation), when the plasma levels of cortisol emulate an acute stress, the GR2 and MR expression levels were upregulated in the brain and head kidney tissues. This result reflects the role of these organs as regulators of the stress response. In general, the rest of the organs, especially gills, intestine, liver, muscle and spleen, showed decreased transcriptional levels of GR1, GR2 and MR, al…

Differential Promotion of Glutamate Transporter Expression and Function by Glucocorticoids in Astrocytes from Various Brain Regions

2005

Steroids that activate glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) and mineralocorticoid receptors have important regulatory effects on neural development, plasticity, and the body's stress response. Here, we investigated the role of corticosteroids in regulating the expression of the glial glutamate transporters glial glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) and glutamate-aspartate transporter (GLAST) in rat primary astrocytes. The synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone provoked a marked increase of GLT-1 transcription and protein levels in cortical astrocytes, whereas GLAST expression remained unaffected. Up-regulation of GLT-1 expression was accompanied by an enhanced glutamate uptake, which could be blocked …

Effects of canrenoate plus angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors versus angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors alone on systolic and diastolic f…

2004

Background Aldosterone (ALDO) exerts profibrotic effects, acting via the mineralocorticoid receptors in cardiovascular tissues. Aldosterone antagonism in combination with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition may better protect against the untoward effects of ALDO than angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition alone. Methods In a double-blind randomized study, the tolerability and efficacy of canrenoate (25 mg/d) plus captopril versus captopril alone were evaluated in 510 patients with an acute anterior myocardial infarction (MI), a serum creatinine concentration 5.5 mEq/L and creatinine levels to >2.0 mg/L after 10 days of treatment were observed. At 180 days, the mitral E-wave–A-wave ra…

Association of a Mineralocorticoid Receptor Gene Polymorphism With Hypertension in a Spanish Population

2009

BACKGROUND To assess the association of polymorphisms and haplotypes of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) (NR3C2) gene to the risk of essential hypertension (HTN) in a Spanish population. METHODS This is a population-based study which included 1,502 subjects (748 women) >18 years old. Twenty-four polymorphisms of NR3C2 gene were analyzed by using SNPlex (Genotyping System based on OLA/PCR technology). RESULTS Alleles of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs5522 were significantly associated with the risk of HTN, both in the recessive and codominant models adjusted by age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). Genotype GG of the rs5522 showed to be protective against HTN odds ratio (OR)…
